What is it?



Polishing and buffing are finishing processes for smoothing a workpiece's surface using an abrasive and a work wheel or a leather strop. Technically polishing refers to processes that use an abrasive that is glued to the work wheel, while buffing uses a loose abrasive applied to the work wheel. Polishing is a more aggressive process while buffing is less harsh, which leads to a smoother, brighter finish.

What is dipping?



It is a double dipping process involving dipping in caustic soda solution to remove the existing oxide layer.

After the caustic soda bath, the aluminium is washed and then dipped into nitric acid solution which removes other surface impurities.

Anodising is an electrochemical process that converts the aluminium surface into a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish

CHARACTERISTICS

The anodic oxide structure originates from the aluminium substrate and is composed entirely of aluminium oxide. This aluminium oxide is not applied to the surface like paint or plating, but is fully integrated with the underlying aluminium substrate, so it cannot chip or peel. It has a highly ordered, porous structure that allows for secondary processes such as colouring and sealing.

HOW IS IT DONE?

Anodising is accomplished by immersing the aluminium into an acid electrolyte solution and passing a current through the aluminium. A cathode is mounted to the inside of the anodising tank; the aluminium acts as an anode, so that oxygen ions are released from the electrolyte to combine with the aluminium atoms at the surface of the part being anodised. Anodising is, therefore, a matter of highly controlled oxidation - the enhancement of a naturally occurring phenomenon.

ELECTRO COLOURING

Electro-colouring is a post anodising electrolytic process in which theanodised load is transferred and immersed to a tank containing a tin solution.

A colour code number is entered into a computer, which calculates the emersion time required to produce the desired colour match. An alternating current is passed to the item whilst immersed.
